Arranging a Christening

Information for parents

If you live on Burnside, Keighley Road, Horse Close or Greatwood, Shortbank Road, Middletown, Newtown or Broughton Road, then Christ Church is YOUR parish church

When you have your child christened (or “baptised”, which is the same thing) your child becomes part of God’s family of the Church and you make important promises on their behalf. You promise that you will pray for them and with them, and that you will help your child to grow in spirit by bringing them to church. The church also promises to support you and your child on the Christian journey. You will receive invitations to family events so that you can keep in touch wiht your church family.

Because the words that you say at your child’s christening are important, we always meet a week or so before the christening to go through the service together. Baptism services (christenings) are usually held at 12.30pm after the morning service.

There are three preparation sessions for you to attend before the Christening. Here you will meet other families and learn more about what it means to help your child set out on their Christian journey.

How much does it cost to have my child christened?  Nothing. There is no fee, though it is usual to give a thanksgiving donation which can be gift aided in a giving envelope. This helps cover the cost of lierature, certificates and candles given to your child and their godparents.

How many godparents can my child have? The usual number is three or four, though there can be more. Godparents have to have been baptised themselves and like you, are prepared to make those special promises to God on your child's behalf.

What do I do now? The best thing is to ring up the vicar on 01756 793612 or email You might also like to come along to Toddler Praise (the Church Toddler group) which is every Wednesday in term-time at 10.30am to meet other parents and children exploring the Christian stories and enjoying time playing together. Sunday morning service at 9.30am is also open to families with child friendly activities available during the service.
